Sometimes reality is harder to believe than fiction, and when that happens, what better medium to capture its madness than animation? When the BBC Ireland realised that, they created On the Air bringing to life some of the most idiosyncratic phone-ins from BBC Radio Ulster’s Gerry Anderson show to the screen by animating the real-life dialogue with colorful characters and re-interpreted settings.

Gerry Anderson said he was concerned with how the animators are representing him: “I am still upset about having only three fingers on each hand and no nose. I’m taking this to the highest court in the land. And then to Strasbourg.”

In this episode (The third one of the series) Gerry’s intrigued by Karen’s call who’s having trouble with a psychotic crow attacking her house. The series was produced by Flickerpix around 2006.

What time is it? Adventure Time with Finn and Jake! You may remember having seen this absolutely crazy, random, bizarre, lovely animation about 3 years ago. Well, it looks like they’ll be back on the small screen thanks to Cartoon Network. Join Jake the dog and Finn the human, for algebraic adventures in The Land of Ooo… totally mathematical!

Originally it was a 7 minute short created by Pendleton Ward (pictured), produced as part of Random! Cartoons for Nickelodeon, which made its TV debut in 2008. The animated short was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject of 2006.

The only explanation behind the story line (squiggle) is that someone must have shaken the writer’s brain and took thoughts out of it at random, which don’t take me wrong, if it worked for the Dadaists, I don’t see why it wont work for Mr. Ward. I love it, and Cartoon Network must have done as well, as they have commissioned two seasons before the show even aired. The programmed airing date is April 2010.

French media groups Method Animation and MK2; and Indian animation studio DQ Entertainment are putting €8 million (U$11.5 million) into a joint kitty to fund a project that will bring Charlie Chaplin to life as a cartoon character in an animated television series. DQ Entertainment will be charge of the CG production.

The series will comprise a total of 104 6 minute long (silent) episodes, with inspiration from Chaplin’s films but also with a lot of new material.

The project has the seal of approval from the Chaplin estate and, according to the DQ chairman and chief executive Tapaas Chakravarti it will be “better than Mr Bean” and he adds: “(Mr Bean) has delighted everyone for a number of years… It’s very, very clear that to tickle people’s funny bones you don’t really have to talk all the time and silent movies can work. Chaplin did it for so many years […] We are absolutely sure that we have to get Chaplin back for 21st century kids and parents.”

The animated shorts are aimed at children aged six and above and are set to hit screens from early 2011.

The story is based on the 1999 Grant Morrison JLA: Earth 2 story, where a heroic Lex Luthor from an alternate universe coming to the Justice League for help against the Crime Syndicate.
Disney Channel has had the go-ahead for their first animated series in 3 years: “Fish Hooks” (working title).

The story revolves around the party guy Milo (Kyle Massey), his neurotic brother Oscar (Justin Roiland) and an overly dramatic goldfish, Bea (Chelsea Staub). They go to Freshwater High, a school at the bottom in a giant fish tank in a local pet store. The series follows their daily lives as they deal with friendships, dating and sports as well as such atypical teen issues like giant lobster attacks and school field trips to the hamster cages.

The series was created by children’s book illustrator Noah Z. Jones, developed for television by Alex Hirsch (”The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack”) and Bill Reiss (”Chowder”), executive-produced by Adam Burton (”The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy”) and directed by Carl Greenblatt and Bill Reiss.

If you haven’t seen this, The Amazing Screw-On Head is a comic book written by Mike Mignola, creator of Hell Boy, and published by Dark Horse Comics. In 2006 an animated pilot was produced and pitched to the Sci-Fi Channel, despite the brilliance of its plot and the great acting talent of Paul Giamatti (Screw-On Head), David Hyde Pierce (Emperor Zombie), Molly Shannon (Patience) and Patton Oswalt (Mr. Groin) the channel didn’t go for it and it never got made. The pilot was released on DVD but that was the end of it.

I remember watching this fantastic pilot a couple of years ago and being charmed by the ‘three-centuries-ago’ feeling, both in timeframe and character design style. Even the technology you see on it, seems to be of modern conception but devised with the machines existing in that time. I wish someone would come to his senses and produce this. I know if I had the means I would!
