Quirky is always a positive in our books and Marcel is nothing but that. Plus he’s got one huge eye! We hope that the next instalment of this little guy’s adventures feature him skiing on someone’s toenail clippings. You’ll understand when you watch it!

This stop frame animation was directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp. Marcel is voiced (untreated & unenhanced) by a genius named Jenny Slate and it was written by both Jenny and Dean.

Marcel wont the Best Animated Short award at AFI Fest.

Surreal short animation about a man who’s life echoes inside a box in his chest… ad infinitum. Yes, now I read that again it sounds like a dream Salvador Dalí may have had.

This blindingly creative and thoughtful short was created by Rebecca Sugar for her animation thesis at the School of Visual Arts, she is a freelance animator based in the NYC area. She also does illustration, paintings and comic books. The animation is the first part of a trilogy, followed by the shorts ‘Cat’ (Peyton Skyler) and ‘Metamorphosis’ (Mikhail Shraga).

There’s something Spumko-esque about he character design and the boiling line but is not quite the same, her work is unique and the movements, the posing and the emotions are just spot on.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, StoryCorps has released Q&A online. Q&A features Joshua Littman, a 12-year-old boy with Asperger’s syndrome, interviewing his mother, Sarah. Joshua’s unique questions and Sarah’s loving, unguarded answers reveal a beautiful relationship that reminds us of the best—and the most challenging—parts of being a mother.

The image above is one of the many concept art research from the Rauch Brothers film.

The Rauch brothers are producing five new cartoons for StoryCorps, which you can catch on the PBS documentary program POV in August and September.

This short is so wonderful and at so many levels, it’s hard to find words to describe it. It brims with heart from the inside out, from idea to realisation. The Rauch brothers have some interesting behind the scenes posts on their website which will shed more light on the project.

According to the Daily Express Tim Burton is taking on the creation of a new animated 3D version of The Addams Family. He is hoping CG will resurrect the spooky Addams Family, who last appeared on the big screen in 1993’s Addams Family Values.

Deadline.com has reported that Illumination Entertainment acquired the rights to the original cartoons by Charles Addams and the company’s boss Chris Meledandri will act as producer. Tim Burton’s intention is to stay away from the original TV series or the 90s films and instead get closer to the original “Addams Family” designs once published in New Yorker Magazine.

This truly inspired stop motion work by Haley Morris is a visual metaphor for the progression of Alzheimer’s. This six minute story portrays an old man who’s struggling to keep hold of the objects he manages to fish out of the ominous ocean beneath him.

The technique seems outstandingly suited for the subject and is clear that Haley has witnessed the damaging effects of this terrible mental deterioration, you can tell when the creating force comes from the heart. That’s probably why it won a well deserved Best Animated Short award at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2009.

The London International Animation Festival is organising a fabulous event with American cult animator Bruce Bickford. This is a rare, one-night-only presentation of his films, featuring the exclusive English premiere of his new film that he has been working on for many years – Cas’l (excerpt bellow).

Bickford is best known for his collaborations with musician Frank Zappa in the 1970s, he’s an underground artist who has mystified animation critics and inspired generations of animators, while somehow eluding fame. He has been described as the world’s only “outsider artist” working in the medium of animation.

The event takes place at The Horse Hospital, 30 Colonnade. London, WC1N 1JD on Monday March 15th at 7pm.
