Á Côz, by Emmanuelle Walker, is an animated series of small dramatic comedies starred by a six year old little girl, who understands (better than most) that the future of our planet is hanging by a hair. She proposes her naive solutions to stop the destruction. All the episodes reach the same conclusion: “When you’re all are dead, I will still be here!”
Aka ‘The king and the Beaver’ is a graduation student film made in 2010 at the mighty Gobelins animation school.
The animation in this lovely short is brilliant, superbly timed, great posing and a cute and original story line, which is probably one of the hardest things to get right in a short film. To make it more remarkable, most of this short was animated by hand and then scanned to TVP for colouring, but due to the lack of high speed scanner at their school they ended up animating directly into TVP in order to finish the film in time.
Written, directed and animated by Nuno Alves Rodrigues, Oussama Bouachéria, Julien Chheng, Sébastien Hary, Aymeric Kevin, Ulysse Malassagne & Franck Monier. Music by Mathieu Alvado.
This lovely short was directed at Cube Creative during the summer of 2010 by Gobelins’ students Louis Thomas, Theo Guignard and Benjamin Moreau. This Parisian agency hires talent graduated from animation schools based on the strength of their student film, which has obviously worked out for both parties. The quality of all their work is astounding and gives students the chance to break into the industry and really prove their worth with great production value pieces like this one.
You have probably seen some of their work before even if you’re not French, some of you may recall a gorgeous short called A Quoi Sa Sert L’amour directed by Louis Clichy, or the amazing bouncing elephant in 7 tonnes 2 by Nicolas Deveaux.
At first I thought this was going to be a funny ironic animation about the nature of deadlines, but instead it turned out to be a wonderfully depicted paradox between two creators and their creations. Do you remember that engraving by Maurice Escher where a couple of hands are drawing each other? Well, this is pretty much like that and you’ll see why. What starts like a familiar situation for any creative with a tight deadline, becomes a rather tense situation between two worlds trying to overcome each other.
This is another beautiful end-of-course short animation created by 5 talented Gobelins students, the clip was not only made for fun and passion but also, like all shorts, to be seen by people… and you could also say that this one was made to be touched. It has such a tactile delivery of textures and colours you’ll feel immersed in its universe from the early frames.
This is the end of course film of 5 Gobelins students: a collaboration between Jérémie Moreau, David Francis, Rony Hotin, Baptist Rogron, Gaelle Thierry and Maïlys Vallade. The story of a lighthouse keeper who suddenly wakes up from his sleep by a particularly large insect.
The attention to detail is remarkable and the combination of techniques works quite well. The only thing I found wrong with the animation is that is not longer, I wish I could see what happens next and then what happened after that and so on. Amazing work as always you Gobelin talented people!
Guided by a strange dog, an old man goes to an icy faraway land. After a grueling journey in the cold snow, he reaches the edge of a frozen lake to which he ventures alone, in there a strange ballet of lights takes place.
This short was directed as a short opening for the Festival International du Film d’Animation (FIFA) d’Annecy 2009.
